Westpac Cruise
During the Vietnam War, the United States sent a significant number of naval assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and support vessels, to the waters off the coast of Vietnam. These naval forces played a crucial role in conducting airstrikes, providing artillery support, conducting naval blockades, and transporting troops and supplies to and from the conflict zone.
The Westpac Cruise was the term used to describe the deployment of these naval forces from their home bases in the Western Pacific, such as those in Japan and the Philippines, to the waters near Vietnam. These deployments were typically part of larger task forces or carrier strike groups that operated under the command of the U.S. Seventh Fleet.
The purpose of the Westpac Cruise was to project U.S. military power, support ground operations in Vietnam, and maintain a presence in the region to deter further aggression.
