The 229th arrived in Vietnam in September of 1965 out of Fort Benning and returned to Fort Hood in April of 1971.

They served with the 1st Cavalry Division with various bases including Camp Radcliff, An Khe, Vinh Thanh Special Forces base, Phu Cat and Bong Son.
