56th AES

The United States Air Force (USAF) 56th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES) played a critical role in providing medical care and evacuating wounded personnel during the Vietnam War. The squadron was activated on July 1, 1966, at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam.

The 56th AES was responsible for airlifting and providing en route care for injured or ill military personnel from various locations in Vietnam to medical facilities outside the combat zone. The squadron operated a fleet of specially equipped aircraft, such as the C-9 Nightingale and the C-141 Starlifter, which were configured to serve as flying hospitals.

The men and women of the 56th AES worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to ensure that wounded personnel received the medical attention they needed as quickly as possible. Their efforts saved countless lives and were crucial in supporting the overall U.S. and allied military operations in Vietnam.

The 56th AES continued its operations in Vietnam until the end of U.S. involvement in the war.
