The primary mission of the 7th Special Forces Group during the Vietnam War was unconventional warfare, which involved working with indigenous forces, conducting reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, and training and advising local troops. They were tasked with conducting special operations in support of the overall U.S. strategy in Vietnam.

The 7th Special Forces Group worked closely with indigenous Montagnard tribespeople in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. They trained and led Montagnard soldiers, known as the "Yards," who were valuable allies in counterinsurgency efforts against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. These operations included conducting patrols, gathering intelligence, and disrupting enemy activities in the region.

In addition to their work with the Montagnard tribespeople, the 7th Special Forces Group also conducted border surveillance along the borders of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. They were involved in cross-border operations, gathering intelligence, and interdicting enemy infiltration routes along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a major supply route for North Vietnamese forces.

The 7th Special Forces Group also participated in numerous reconnaissance missions, often behind enemy lines, to gather vital information on enemy troop movements and activities. They worked alongside other Special Forces units, such as the Studies and Observations Group (SOG), which conducted highly classified covert operations throughout Southeast Asia.

Overall, the 7th Special Forces Group made significant contributions to the war effort in Vietnam through their specialized skills, training, and close work with local forces. Their efforts were instrumental in disrupting enemy operations and providing critical intelligence to support U.S. and allied forces during the conflict.
