Underground Special Operations Unit. US ARMY.

"Tunnel Rats" was a term used during the Vietnam War to describe soldiers who were specially trained to navigate and clear the extensive network of underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The tunnels were a crucial part of the communist forces' guerrilla warfare strategy, providing hidden routes for movement, storage, and living quarters.

The Tunnel Rats were often volunteers, and their task was extremely dangerous due to the cramped and dark conditions within the tunnels, as well as the threat of booby traps and enemy ambushes. The U.S. Army and other allied forces trained these soldiers to be small in stature, as the tunnels were often narrow and required individuals to crawl through them.

The Tunnel Rats used various tools for their dangerous missions, including flashlights, handguns, bayonets, and explosives for tunnel demolition. The work was mentally and physically grueling, as they had to be constantly vigilant for hidden dangers. Despite the risks involved, these soldiers played a vital role in disrupting the enemy's underground infrastructure.

It's important to note that while the term "Tunnel Rat" specifically refers to those who navigated the tunnels in Vietnam, tunnel warfare was not unique to this conflict. Similar tactics involving tunnels have been employed in various wars and conflicts throughout history.
