In 1959 this unit was dissolved and replaced by the ‘Cong An’ and was controlled by the Political Directorate growing to approximately 25,000 operatives by 1964. It had a dual role, Border Protection and the running of the POW Camps in the American Vietnam War. It was renamed the Border Defense Force (Lực lượng Phòng vệ Biên giới) in 1979. The ‘Cong An’ was modeled after the PAVN badge but has a deep green surround and the legend CA superimposed on the gear wheel at the bottom.
