  2. The 3rd Battalion, 23rd Infantry, was part of the Americal Division, formally known as the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). It was activated in 1967 specifically for service in Vietnam. The Americal Division, including the 3-23 Infantry, was deployed to Vietnam to support U.S. and allied efforts during the Vietnam War.

  6. The battalion participated in various military operations throughout its deployment in Vietnam, engaging in both offensive and defensive actions. Like many infantry units during the Vietnam War, the 3-23 Infantry was involved in a variety of missions, including search and destroy operations, securing key areas, and providing security for other units.

  8. The battalion operated in different regions of Vietnam, including areas with dense jungles, rural villages, and contested territories.

  9. End of Deployment:

  10. The Americal Division, including the 3-23 Infantry, served in Vietnam until it was deactivated in 1971 as part of the U.S. drawdown of forces in Southeast Asia.

My Lai Massacre, March 16, 1968 23rd Infantry Division, Recon Patch Banned Patch - Unauthorized - Banned Patch

After the My Lai Massacre of 1968 units of the 23rd Infantry Division became known amongst their peers in Vietnam as the 'Americalley Division' (AMERI CALLEY) after the officer, Lt. William Calley who ordered the 16 March 1968 massacre of Vietnamese Civilians at My Lai north of Quang Tri.

Recon Units of the 23rd Infantry Division began wearing this patch in the late part of 1968 / early part of 1969.

It lasted only a short time before Recon Units of the 23rd (They had three recon companies) were ordered to cease the wearing of this and another patch.

Superb piece linked to an event that eventually changed public opinion on the Vietnam War to such an extent that the US pulled support from the Vietnam war, led to the name, 'Baby Killers' and effectively changed the lives of all returning Vietnam War Veterans across the world.
