The National Liberation Front (NLF), also known as the Viet Cong, played a significant role in the Vietnam War as the communist insurgency force in South Vietnam. By 1976, the NLF had essentially ceased to exist as an independent entity, largely due to the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1975.

In 1975, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) launched a major offensive against South Vietnam, leading to the fall of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, on April 30, 1975. This event marked the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of North and South Vietnam under communist control.

Following the reunification, the NLF, which had been a separate insurgent organization operating in South Vietnam, lost its distinct identity. The new unified government of Vietnam, led by the Communist Party of Vietnam, absorbed former NLF members and integrated them into the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and various government institutions. The NLF essentially ceased to exist as an independent armed force by mid 1976.

The reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1975 marked the culmination of communist efforts to unify the country under a single government. After reunification, the NLF's role in the conflict became a historical chapter, and its former members were integrated into the new government and military structures of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
