The 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, commonly known as "First of the Seventh," was an integral component of the 1st Air Cavalry Division (Airmobile). This squadron was formed by reflagging the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, which had gained notoriety during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965.
During the Vietnam War, the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment conducted a range of operations, including air assault missions, search and destroy operations, and combat patrols. They often employed helicopters to rapidly deploy troops into combat zones, conduct reconnaissance, and engage the enemy.
One of the notable operations involving the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment was the Battle of Bong Son in 1966. The squadron was involved in intense fighting against North Vietnamese forces in the Bong Son area, located in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam.
The 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment continued to be engaged in various combat operations throughout the war, facing the challenges of guerilla warfare and hostile enemy forces. They conducted operations in different regions of South Vietnam, including the Central Highlands, the Iron Triangle, and the border areas near Cambodia and Laos.
